Hello! I'm Haley.
Most recently, I was a product designer at Civis Analytics in Chicago, IL. Previously, I worked on conversational interface design at a small health-tech startup, and before that studied Professional Writing and Human-Computer Interaction at Carnegie Mellon University. Throughout, I've freelanced and provided UX expertise for startups in analytics, financial technology, security & privacy, wealth management, healthcare, and education.
I practice product design as a full-stack sport and consider myself a generalist both in the way I view the scope of my role and in how I define the process I undergo to solve the problems I'm presented with. Done well and for the right reasons, I tend to believe designing products should be pretty hard. What has always been easy and exciting for me is the chance I get to redefine my job, just a little bit, to meet the demands of each new challenge.
5 things I'm proud of that aren't on my resume
One: I've written public facing copy for every company I've ever worked for, including the movie theater where I slung candy & popcorn at 16
Two: In college, I co-founded a storytelling club and won awards for my research on taking narrative approaches to understanding undergraduate stress culture
Three: I ran varsity cross-country and track & field for 10 years and was captain of both my high school and college teams
Four: In my current role, I developed a series called the Care and Keeping of Product in which I give quarterly talks to my tech team on shared topics like mental models, status, and semantics
Five: I won an open call with Schmidt Futures for my idea on how to use behavioral design and computer science to improve the individual education program for students with disabilities
